Discovery Health Medical Scheme is a registered open medical scheme administered by Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd. Its option range runs from network hospital plans through savings-based options to comprehensive cover, so the decision is less about the scheme and more about which tier fits your claiming pattern.
Options are tiered: entry network hospital cover, mid-tier options that add a medical savings account, and comprehensive options that add an above-threshold benefit and richer in-hospital tariff cover. Within several tiers there is a network variant that costs less in exchange for using listed hospitals and providers.
The scheme is separate from Discovery's insurance products. Vitality, gap cover and health insurance are sold by other Discovery entities and are not part of your medical scheme benefits.
Compare the in-hospital tariff rate, whether the option is network-restricted, the defined co-payments on scopes and joint procedures, and whether chronic cover extends beyond the 27 statutory Chronic Disease List conditions. Those four items explain most of the price difference between adjacent options.
Confirm current-year contributions and benefits on the scheme's own published benefit guide before you commit. Figures change every January.
Discovery Health Medical Scheme is a registered medical scheme regulated by the Council for Medical Schemes. Vitality, gap cover and health insurance are separate products from other Discovery companies.
It depends on your claiming pattern. Healthy singles usually land on a network hospital option; households with chronic medication or frequent day-to-day claims typically need a savings or comprehensive tier.
